A Town Rebuilt with Heart
In 1998, Avila Beach underwent a remarkable transformation. Underground petroleum leaks from a nearby pipeline had contaminated the soil beneath much of the town. Rather than abandon the community, residents and officials made the bold decision to excavate and remediate the entire downtown — then rebuild it from scratch.
The result is a town that feels both historic and fresh — with a charming boardwalk, wide sandy beach, and a Front Street designed for people, not cars. The community that emerged from that effort is tight-knit, proud, and deeply invested in keeping Avila Beach the special place it is.
Wine Country Meets the Sea
Avila Beach sits at the edge of the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley AVAs — two of California's most celebrated wine regions. The cool marine influence from the Pacific creates ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rhône varieties.
Front Street is home to five tasting rooms, including Tolosa, Claiborne & Churchill, Sinor-LaVallee, and Center of Effort — all pouring world-class wines just steps from the sand. The monthly Wine Walk is a beloved local tradition.
